What is Zelle?

Person-to-Person (P2P) payments have become increasingly popular as technology advances. Many people are looking for an easier alternative to cash payments to friends, family, and acquaintances without having to meet up with the person to pay them. In 2017, a P2P payment app was released call Zelle.

What is Zelle?

Zelle is a P2P payment app. What does that mean? Basically, it's an app on your smartphone where you can request a payment or pay a friend directly through the app, similar to a cash payment.

Who created Zelle?

Zelle was created by the seven major banks: JPMorgan, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, US Bancorp, Capital One, BB&T, and PNC. They joined together to create a payment system that rivaled Venmo, another P2P payment app.

What are the features?

The features of Zelle make it convenient and simple when it comes to paying someone or getting paid. All you need to collect/provide is either your email address or phone number and you can pay that person. The app will collect more data from you, but won't share that information with the person you're paying, which makes it more secure than a bank transfer. You also don't have to wait for the funds to go through.

How does it work?

Since it's a mobile phone app, the first step will be downloading the app. Then, you'll create an account with your phone number and select the financial institution you use. Some financial institutions offer this service that's linked directly in the mobile app. Other financial institutions may not offer it, but that doesn't mean you can't use it.

If your bank offers Zelle, you will be redirected to the mobile app where you'll conduct your business. You won't need to keep the Zelle app if your financial institution offers Zelle.

If your bank does not offer Zelle, you will use the Zelle app to conduct your business. You can either enter your bank account information into the Zelle app, or you can choose to link it to your debit card to make the payments.

Does York County FCU have a partnership?

At this time, York County FCU does not have a partnership with Zelle, and does not offer it through our mobile app. You'll need to use the Zelle app if you want to use this service.
